Court Assistance
The Court Program provides specially trained staff and volunteers from the community to assist victims of domestic violence and other crimes from the initial bail hearing throughout the court process.
OBJECTIVES
* To provide the victim with bail and other ongoing information related to their case.
* To explain the court process to the victim.
* To act as a liaison with the victim on behalf of the Crown Attorney and Police Services.
* To attend court with the victim, if requested, for any court appearances related to the crime.
* to facilitate the victim accessing appropriate support services in our community.
* To educate and promote victim assistance in our community.
ELIGIBITY
The Court Program is available to any victim of domestic violence involved in the court system. Other victims of crime may also access the services of the Court Program.
ADDITIONAL SERVICES
The staff and volunteers of the Court Program can also provide information on:
* Personal Safety
* The effects of violence on children
* Referral for counseling
A COMMUNITY RESPONSE TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The May-Iles Report released in July 1978 stated:
"A combined effort must be made by our Government and Communities in order to put an end to Family Violence." |
